Theatre Anthropology
Actors' techniques of different theatre and dance genres vary
according to their tradition, but the principles behind the
techniques used to achieve stage presence and mould energy in
performance, are common.
Augusto Omolú (Afro-Brazilian Orixá Dance) together with Roberta
Carreri and Julia Varley (Odin Teatret) demonstrate these basic
principles, from the first steps in training to dialogues
established through strong and soft energy, variations of rhythm,
extrovert and introvert characteristics, music accompaniment and
improvisation with objects.
The demonstration intends to give practical examples of the
principles in theatre anthropology as presented by Eugenio Barba in
his book "The Paper Canoe". The actors establish a dialogue of
physical and vocal actions exploring a range of possible
associations before a firm meaning is introduced. Eugenio Barba's
book itself becomes a partner - a butterfly, a flag, a fan, a
musical instrument, a monument on which to stand… as the actors
play transforming words into a dance of impulses.
If Eugenio Barba is present, he joins the actors to answer
questions from the audience.
