CARAVAN. Artists on the road

A European project

The Caravan project arises from considering the years of crises and transformation that European countries have been through in the recent years.
The purpose of the project is to promote dialogue between these countries through an experience based on solidarity and renascence.

One of the main characteristics of the project is the use of a Caravan vehicle, which will be equipped with multimedia technologies and made into a practical stage on wheels. In old times, theatre companies travelled around Europe, from town to town, bringing shows that mixed various theatrical and musical languages. This Caravan Theatre will revive this old tradition, but with innovative technologies that the new century offers.

The project has selected four places of "crises and renascence" located in four different countries. Each of these four locations will create and develop a project, working for three months in their own countries with local communities and then travel with the resulting performance to the next destination, where it will be presented to other communities.

The map shows that Turin's performance travels to Seville, Seville's performance travels to Holstebro, Holstebro's performance travels to Sofia, Sofia's performance travels to Turin, with the same modus operandi: 3 months of rehearsals of a production on the theme, 'Crisis and renaissance', and then a minimum of 10 stop tour from the original town to the next.

The CARAVAN Project is initiated by two promoters: the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Torino, which will be the Project Coordinator, and the Master Course in Social & Community Theatre at the University of Turin.

European Partners

Besides Fondazione CRT and Master in Social and Community Theatre from Torino University, there are European partners coming from 9 countries

ODIN TEATRET

Program

Odin Teatret and the Jasonites will start their community work in April-May 2012 and then again in June-July 2012 with two workshops with mask maker Deborah Hunt. The workshops will visit schools and local institutions to include children and story-telling in the creation of scenes and theatrical interventions which will culminate at the opening of the European Meeting of 35.000 scouts in Holstebro (Denmark) on July the 22nd 2012. Odin Teatret, the Jasonites, Deborah Hunt, their workshop participants together with participants of the workshop "International Stilt Council" led by Tage Larsen, and with the artists of Cirkus på Kanten (Circus on the Edge) directed by Kai Bredholt, and in collaboration with local associations like the firemen, police, schools, etc. will stage an event which has to entertain and involve 35.000 scouts of all ages. The Caravan performance from Atalaya, Seville, will also be presented at this opening. Then Kai Bredholt will move to the extreme part of the region, close to the sea, in a desolate area, to realise the Cirkus på Kanten together with local farmers and circus students from the Circus School in Copenhagen. Spectators will sit in the circus amphitheatre built of straw, with the sea in the background and mountain-climbers coming down from the lighthouse, while horses, rabbits, pigs and cows mix with actors and acrobats. The Circus will be presented 5 times.
In the winter months Odin Teatret and the Jasonites will conclude the performance that will go on tour with the Caravan in spring 2013. The tour will stop in Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Germany (where also Odin Teatret's production, The Chronic Life, will be presented) and Bulgaria. Some performances will be arranged as barters with the local population (Denmark and Germany), others will be accompanied by lectures at the University (Poland), and others still by workshops to create collaboration with local theatre practitioners (Germany, Bulgaria).

The dates for Odin Teatret and the Jasonites Caravan tour are:

3 stops in Denmark, May 2013
1 stop in Göteborg, Teater Spira, May
1 stop in Poland, Lodz University and hospital, May
